Norma Miller

Eagle, Idaho | Soft Pastel & Watercolor | Landscape & Garden

“I love the personalities of trees.”

For years, Norma Miller’s career in landscape design nurtured her love of nature and taught her to see the hidden structure and beauty within outdoor spaces. But she always longed for a broader creative freedom. That opportunity arrived after a soft pastel plein air workshop in 2023 and her transition into retirement, when she finally found the time to fully embrace painting.

Today, Miller’s work focuses on the intimate, fleeting moments of the natural world—the dance of light and shadow, interesting shapes, and the distinct mood of a garden or landscape. Working primarily in soft pastels and watercolor, she combines direct observation, photography, and imagination to create representational paintings with an impressionistic flair.

Her goal is to capture a unique sense of place and draw attention to the quiet beauty that is so often overlooked.

Painting En Plein Air

For Miller, painting outdoors is a way to truly feel the moment. She is energized by the speed at which the light changes and the challenge of translating that fleeting energy into a painting.

Plein air painting forces her to slow down, observe, and respond to what is happening around her. Her hope is that the energy and joy she experiences outdoors will come through in her paintings and be passed along to the viewer.

Finding the Story in the Landscape

Miller believes that behind every landscape is a story—one that we often rush past without noticing.

Her training in landscape design taught her to recognize the underlying structure of an outdoor space, while her love of impressionism allows her to explore its mood and atmosphere. Together, those influences help her transform an ordinary corner of the outdoors into something more intimate and evocative.

“I paint plein air to slow down, notice the essence of the moment, and turn an ordinary outdoor corner into an intimate, shared dream.”

Beyond the Easel

Miller lives in Eagle, Idaho, but her love of the natural world began much farther east. She grew up in northern Maine along the Canadian border, surrounded by a very different landscape.

Perhaps that early connection to the outdoors explains one of her favorite things about painting today: she loves the personalities of trees.
